'Nonanachronistic.icu' Pop-Ups

Posted: December 16, 2019

Online con artists are becoming more creative with their fraudulent schemes. While technical support tactics have been around for many years, they continue to be improved by using new strategies whose goal is to collect information from the target. One of these new technical support tactics is promoted via the 'Nonanachronistic.icu' pop-ups, and it aims to achieve three things:

  • Convince the victim to call a fake technical support number. This might give the con artists a chance to try to sell overpriced and fake products or services.
  • Convince the victims to enter the username and password for their Microsoft account via a fake login prompt.
  • Ask the victims to enter their 'Windows Product Key' in a fake confirmation prompt.

In addition to the fake technical support number and the fake prompts, the 'Nonanachronistic.icu' pop-ups also may contain fake anti-virus reports and warnings whose sole purpose is to trick the victims into thinking that their computers' health is not good at all.

Users might encounter the 'Nonanachronistic.icu' pop-ups while browsing shady websites such as the pages used to host pirated movies and adult content – these websites are often paid to promote questionable content such as the 'Nonanachronistic.icu' pop-ups. Seeing these pop-ups in your Web browser may often be accompanied by undesired side effects such as being unable to navigate your Web browser – a simple trick that may further confuse the victims and make them think that the fake warnings are real.

The number used by the scammers is 888-407-4957 – it is not affiliated with Microsoft or any reputable technical support contractor. We assure you that dialing this number is not a good idea because you may get involved in a costly scheme. If you encounter the 'Nonanachronistic.icu' pop-ups while visiting the Web, you should close them and ignore their contents immediately.
