The OneDrive.exe CPU Miner is part of a long list of Trojan miners, which are installed without the user's approval, and then launched to use the computer's CPU resources to mine for various cryptocurrencies such as Monero stealthily. While these miners do not pose a threat to the information and files of users, they might cause other issues such as:

  • Poor computer performance due to the excessive amount of processing power used by the miner.
  • System instability and crashes.
  • Potential hardware damage if the CPU isn't cooled properly or cleaned from dust on a regular basis.

The CPU miners will mine for the specified cryptocurrency silently, and all generated profits will be sent to the author's wallet automatically. In short, this means that the cybercrooks are hijacking the hardware resources of random PC users to use them for their own gain.

Unfortunately, the OneDrive.exe CPU Miner is not the only Trojan miner we've encountered recently – we received hundreds of updates regarding various stealthy mining applications, which are programmed to work silently, without making the user aware of their presence:

Dubious CPU miners can be spotted only by either using a reputable anti-malware application or checking your running processes for any entries that consume a significant amount of CPU resources without being used.
