OSDSoft CPU Miner

Posted: April 5, 2019

OSDSoft is a Trojan that makes use of infected computers and their hardware to mine for digital currency without the user's knowledge. The threatening software that runs the OSDSoft task is usually bundled with free programs found on many places around the Internet. Unfortunately, some of the sources of these programs do not always disclose the contents of the software bundles they offer accurately. Users may find that their computers have OSDSoft CPU Miner installed automatically later on, as it was never mentioned in the installation file.

Once the OSDSoft CPU Miner is installed on a computer, it will use up the CPU and graphics card power as much as it can to generate cryptocurrency for its masters. Once the miner is working, users will notice stuttering and freezing when running full-screen applications, because of its hijacking of resources. This is done to generate revenue, but the prolonged stress to the CPU and graphics card may shorten their lives if this keeps up. To sum things up, when a computer is infected with the OSDSoft CPU Miner, common symptoms include the following:

  • High CPU and GPU usage.
  • A process with seemingly random numbers and letters taking up nearly 100% of the CPU or GPU resources.
  • Slowness when using the PC.
  • Programs that take a long time to launch.
  • Windows minimize and maximize slowly, programs take a long time to respond.
  • You can find the DBUpdater.exe process running in the background.

What does the most damage in the long run, apart from the risk of information theft, is the fact that the OSDSoft CPU Miner will use the CPU's power as long as it's on. Since there is no other outward sign that the program is running, chances are the symptoms are the only way a user can discover that their machines were infected with the miner.
