ProgressBuffer
We have been experiencing a drastic increase in the number of adware and Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs) that target macOS and the popular Safari Web browser. Apple's software has been thought to be a secure stronghold for many years, but it seems that online con artists and even malware creators are managing to find cracks that can be exploited. This post focuses on ProgressBuffer, a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) that works on the macOS exclusively. This software is not unsafe, and you should not be too concerned if you notice it on your computer. However, the lack of harmful behavior does not mean that you should tolerate the minor annoyances that ProgressBuffer is able to cause – the removal of this PUP is recommended.
ProgressBuffer may be introduced to your macOS device on accident when you try to install pirated software, installers downloaded from non-reputable sites or even if you fall for a fake download/update. Once running, ProgressBuffer will hide its activity in a background process, and then make changes to your Web browser's behavior, so that it redirects you to ad-ridden sites or unknown search engines. While these redirects are of no harm, they can be very annoying to deal with since they will interrupt your browsing sessions, especially.
If you feel like your Web browser is behaving weirdly, then it is possible that a PUP like ProgressBuffer might be the cause of this. You can check for such intrusive software by running a reputable macOS security tool. The latter software will not just help you identify problematic programs, but it also will assist you with their full removal.
