SASA Ads

Posted: December 29, 2014

SASA is an adware application that makes changes to your Web browser for delivering new advertising content. On average, advertisements promoted by SASA advertisements are not meant to harm your PC, but SASA advertisements may accidentally expose you to threatening advertisement content or create other security vulnerabilities while you browse the Web. Unless unusual circumstances have prompted you to install SASA advertisements and use its content intentionally, malware researchers advise deleting SASA advertisements with a good anti-adware program.

The Advertisements that Came to Your Browser without Fanfare

SASA is a new adware product that malware experts have seen in increasing distribution as of late 2014. It's thus far confirmed delivery methods involve bundling with other adware programs and additional forms of free software. However, some payloads including SASA advertisements also could be installed by Trojans, exploit kits or other PC threats. Obrona, SecurityandShoppingAdvisor and various coupon adware extensions are some of the other brands of Potentially Unwanted Programs sometimes installed with SASA advertisements.

SASA uses features typical of most adware products. Symptoms of an SASA advertisements installation may include:

  • You may experience software slowdowns, particularly with respect to your Web-browsing activities.
  • SASA advertisements may load browser advertisements in separate pop-up windows. These pop-ups may load at timed intervals, or whenever you visit a new Web page.
  • SASA advertisements also may modify HTML pages as your browser loads them, allowing SASA advertisements to insert new advertisements directly into the browser's window.

SASA marks the majority of its delivered content with 'advertisements by SASA' tags, which may let you differentiate between SASA advertisements' content and content native to any individual website.

Finding the Invisible Adware

Along with being installed automatically, SASA also tries to avoid acquiring your permission to remain on your PC. Most versions of SASA advertisements don't install themselves with Control Panel entries or other, telltale signs of a new application that could be deleted by standard channels. Malware experts also can confirm that SASA doesn't allow its removal via Chrome's extension manager, despite specializing in modifying that browser, in particular. Other brands of Web browsers have yet to be altered by SASA advertisements, although this situational immunity doesn't extend to all adware.

If you do need to delete SASA advertisements from Chrome, the use of general anti-adware software can remove both this add-on and other adware that may be installed along with SASA advertisements. Most SASA advertisements installations are the fault of simple user errors, rather than threats, and malware researchers would suggest that any victims pay attention to their future sources for file downloads. However, even if you don't want to limit your downloads to safe sources, many anti-adware and anti-malware scanners should be competent at detecting the bundles that are most likely to circulate SASA advertisements.
