Search.ueep.com

Posted: June 3, 2013

Search.ueep.com is a Web-searching sub-domain that 'borrows' the results of the prominent search engine Yahoo Search while its underlying site, Ueep.com, concerns itself with technology news. While neither Search.ueep.com nor its main site have been found to be involved in the promotion of any kind of online PC threats, there has been a recent increase in browser-hijacking attacks that are linked to Search.ueep.com, both with and without a facilitating browser add-on. Redirects to Search.ueep.com or other browser activity that forces you to visit Search.ueep.com should be considered equivalent to an infection by a low-level PC threat, and you should uninstall Search.ueep.com-promoting browser hijackers with a reputable company's anti-malware software.

Search.ueep.com and the Search Redirect that May Make You 'Eep!' in Surprise

Considered solely as a site without examining the circumstances surrounding it, Search.ueep.com is neither remarkable nor malicious, with its singular purpose being to display results that are borrowed from legitimate search engines. SpywareRemove.com malware researchers didn't find any evidence of Search.ueep.com tampering with these results in the usual means – such as by including extra advertisements, affiliate links or links to irrelevant websites. The main site of which Search.ueep.com is a part, it should be noted, actually is a technology news site that also appears to gather its articles from disparate but non-hostile sources.

All would be well – if it weren't for reports of browser attacks that forced their victims to visit Search.ueep.com automatically. These attacks have been seen in two separate formats that are implemented via two slightly different configurations of browser hijackers:

  • A Firefox-specific add-on that purports to be a search utility, when its actual purpose is to redirect your searches over to Search.ueep.com. Despite being a visible toolbar, this variant of the Search.ueep.com browser hijacker doesn't display options for being uninstalled through the usual methods for removing Firefox's add-ons.
  • For Chrome, a hijack that locks your page to Search.ueep.com and ignores any attempted changes to your homepage settings.

Backpedaling Away from a Search.ueep.com Redirect

Search.ueep.com is not, at this time, a danger to either your browser or the rest of your computer, and even being forced to contact Search.ueep.com is not an immediate threat of any kind. However, care should be taken to avoid likely infection sources for browser hijackers that are interested in promoting Search.ueep.com; SpywareRemove.com malware researchers especially note various illegitimate music sites as being major sources of browser hijackers for Search.ueep.com.

Since browser hijackers for Search.ueep.com have a marked history of avoiding all of the expected uninstallation methods, you can use anti-malware applications to most easily remove any Search.ueep.com-related malware from your computer. Additional steps, such as booting in Safe Mode, closing your browser or updating the anti-malware scanner of your choice, also may increase your chances of success.
