Skun

Posted: March 28, 2006

Skun is a backdoor Trojan that is quite old and can't keep up with modern threats, which comes packed with loads of features that allow attackers to execute all kinds of threatening operations on their victim's computers. However, this does not mean that Skun is not used to day necessarily, and it is highly likely that some users who still use Internet Relay Chat (IRC) clients may come across this threatening piece of software.

The Skun backdoor Trojan may be still distributed via user-modified IRC clients, which work as expected but also may drop the Skun Trojan on the user's computer silently. When Skun is initialized, it performs several actions whose purpose is to ensure that the threat will persist through computer restarts, and it will always launch as soon as Windows starts. The Skun backdoor Trojan drops its payload in a file named 'Task.tsk,' which is stored in the default Windows folder (whose name may vary depending on the Windows version). It also modifies the Windows Registry by creating a key, which launches 'Task.tsk' as soon as Windows boots automatically.

Skun backdoor Trojan has the ability to record keystrokes, alter the configuration of the IRC client it arrived with, as well as send out all recorded logs via FTP or e-mail. The best protection against Skun backdoor Trojan is to make sure that your anti-virus software is updated and running at all times. Also, it is advised to be careful while downloading unknown files from untrustworthy Web destinations, since this is one of the most common ways to end up downloading threats on your computer unknowingly. .
