Trojan.DarktrackRAT is a remote access Trojan, which is being offered for free on several online forums and blogs related to cybercrime. The authors have released a full version of this product and, unfortunately, it seems that their application packs a list of features that would allow any wannabe cybercriminal to cause severe problems to all users they manage to infect with the Trojan.DarktrackRAT.

Since all sorts of cybercriminals may use a custom server of Trojan.DarktrackRAT to infect victims, it is likely that they might take advantage of a broad range of propagation techniques – social media spam, email spam, fake downloads, pirated software, low-quality torrent sites, etc. The purpose of Trojan.DarktrackRAT is to gain persistence on the victim's machine silently and then provide the remote attacker with the ability to execute a long list of actions on the compromised computer. Some of the primary features of Trojan.DarktrackRAT are:

  • Overclock utility, which might tamper with the CPU, GPU or RAM of the remote computer to cause a system crash.
  • File manager, which allows the upload, download, and execution of files.
  • Remote command prompt access.
  • Remote Registry editor
  • Screen and camera capture.
  • Remote desktop acces
  • DDoS utility, which can use several infected computers simultaneously to flood a website or IP address.

Some of Trojan.DarktrackRAT's features allow the remote attacker to infect the computer with additional threats, therefore making this RAT threatening exceptionally. Unfortunately, spotting the Trojan.DarktrackRAT's presence on your PC is very difficult, and the only surefire way to identify and eliminate this threat is to use a trustworthy anti-virus software suite. Anti-virus software also is the best way to ensure that threats like Trojan.DarktrackRAT will never manage to get to your PC in the first place.
