Udmserve.net

Posted: January 3, 2014

Udmserve.net is a threat-distributing website that uses browser vulnerabilities to infect your PC with a bare minimum of exposure required. Exploit-abusing sites like Udmserve.net often distribute multi-purpose, high-level PC threats like rootkits, backdoor Trojans and worms, which are persistent, but often difficult to detect as dangers to your PC's security. The exploit-based content used to attack your PC is designed to be invisible, and passive anti-malware protection is important for blocking Udmserve.net's attacks. If you have had contact with Udmserve.net or, especially, see recurring signs of Udmserve.net-related browser problems, malware experts warn that your PC already could be infected and that anti-malware scanning services are required immediately.

The Site that Serves Cyber Nightmares... Quietly

Udmserve.net is a threat-delivering site, and like all infection vectors, should be avoided strenuously. Attacks promoting Udmserve.net through pop-ups, similar to the functions of adware, have been in circulation since at least 2012. However, the latest exploit kits in use by Udmserve.net remain unidentified, although malware experts note that their use has been reported as 'Blackhole-like,' reminiscent of the potent threat-installing tool, the Blackhole Exploit Kit. Exploit kit attacks from Udmserve.net's pop-ups and other content are concealed as zero-pixel-wide iFrame content. They also appear to have ties to the Onestats.net domain, which should be treated as hostile.

Current attacks by Udmserve.net are confirmed to exploit Java builds, although most exploit kits also may fall back on other software vulnerabilities as is necessary. A successful attack installs harmful software onto your computer and doesn't require you to download or install anything on your own. Malware researchers, who categorize these attacks as the most severe kind, find that having anti-malware products that can block these attacks passively are the most practical defenses against them and the threats served by Udmserve.net.

Keeping Your PC Safe from Stealth-Attacking Threats

Besides the always-applicable help of good anti-malware products, you also can update software to eliminate many of the exploits used by Udmserve.net and other PC threats. Software to update includes more than just your browser since Java, Flash and default Windows programs all are common targets. Unfortunately, due to the presence of zero-day exploits that have yet to be patched, updating your software isn't equivalent to total immunity to an attempt to install threats onto your computer via your Web browser.

PC threats installed by Udmserve.net don't necessarily show symptoms that allow you to find them by sight. For the sake of your computer and all the information that passes through it, it's best to assume that a compromise has taken place after any contact with Udmserve.net. Malware experts would recommend booting your PC through a free USB drive directly into Safe Mode, and then using that environment as a launching point for thorough anti-malware scans.
