'UN COVID-19 Stimulus' Email Scam

Posted: April 10, 2020

It appears that online con artists are seeing the Coronavirus pandemic as a great opportunity to trick more people out of their money. Recently, hundreds of users have reported receiving a suspicious email titled 'UN COVID-19 Stimulus.' This appears to be one of the latest schemes related to the COVID-19 outbreak, and it tries to trick people into thinking that they have been chosen to receive a 'stimulus package' that is worth €20,000 cash and €1,000 worth of sanitizers. Although the sums are cited in Euro, it is possible that other fraudsters may opt to run a variant of the tactic that uses U.S. Dollars.

The message state that the recipient has to contact maget.norbright1@gmail.com to confirm their identity, and receive the stimulus package. Needless to say, users who contact this email will join the next part of the tactic that is likely to aim to take money for them – this can be done by telling them to pay some money to confirm their identity, or outright asking them to enter their payment details in a 3rd-party website. Regardless of the theft method the fraudsters choose to use, you can rest assured that there is no such thing as an 'UN COVID-19 Stimulus' package. Even if there was, its recipients would not be contacted via unexpected email messages.

If you see the 'UN COVID-19 Stimulus' email scam message in your inbox, you should block the sender and ignore the message contents. It is recommended to be very careful with any Coronavirus-themed messages, applications, websites and emails you see – con artists are exploiting the popularity of this topic, and you may often end up being taken to fraudulent content.
