UpdateSearch

Posted: June 10, 2020

UpdateSearch belongs to the application kinds that are classified as browser hijackers, as well as Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUPs). Their primary purpose is to promote, in most cases, fake search engines and generate money by injecting promoted links or advertisements into the search results. Usually, users do not download these applications knowingly, and instead, they get tricked into installing them through bundling or other deceptive methods.

When installed, UpdateSearch will modify some of the default Web browser settings. The default search engine will be changed to feed.update-search.com. The homepage and the new tab page will be set to open Portal.update-search.com. Any searches done while UpdateSearch is installed on the computer system will be redirected through update-search.com, which in turn uses search.yahoo.com to generate a list of results.

To restore their previous browser setting, users will most likely have to uninstall UpdateSearch completely. This also is the recommended course of action when dealing with any of the various search browser extensions that are available online.
