'Wacker' Email Virus

Posted: July 1, 2020

Dozens of users have received fake emails titled 'Wacker – Customer Enquiry <RANDOM NUMBERS>' recently. The message is meant to look as if it was sent by a Wacker Chemie AG, a company operating in the chemical industry. However, they are not the entity behind these emails and, instead, the messages are being used to spread threatening software such as the NetWire RAT (Remote Access Trojan.) The recent campaign, called the 'Wacker' email virus, appears to target users worldwide, and it is not clear whether a high-profile threat actor is the one responsible for it.

The unsafe 'Wacker' email virus contains a file attachment that poses as an '.XLS' file, but, in reality, it contains a nefarious macro script that the document will prompt you to execute – it may try to get your approval by telling you that this should be allowed so you can view the file's contents.

Falling for the 'Wacker' Email Virus may have terrible consequences, because the NetWire RAT payload it delivers is threatening exceptionally, and it allows remote attackers to gain access to all of the information stored on the infected system.

Do not forget that fake email messages and attachments is the most popular trick used to propagate malware, and you should always be careful when interacting with such content. Make sure to research the sender's email address to determine whether it is fake or not, and also remember to scan the email attachments by using an up-to-date anti-virus application.
