Web Companion

Web Companion is a piece of software that many anti-virus products deem to be a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) and recommend its removal. This program claims to be a useful browser helper that can help avoid malware and privacy breaches, as well as enhance the user's safety while browsing the Web. However, users who install the Web Companion application may end up experiencing unwanted changes regarding their browser's configuration. Web Companion's installer requests permission to modify the settings of the system's default Web browser, and it then uses these permissions to promote 3rd-party search engines like Yahoo, Bing, Yandex and others. While these changes are not nefarious, they may hinder your ability to find trustworthy search results.

In addition to promoting 3rd-party search engines via intrusive browser changes, the Web Companion application also may be included in software bundles, which include opt-out offers for Web Companion. Users who pay close attention to installation instruction should be able to spot such offers and decline Web Companion's installation easily. However, users who are not careful may install Web Companion unknowingly and end up wondering what software has changed their browser's homepage and search engine.

If you notice Web Companion among your list of installed programs, and you did not install this application intentionally, then we suggest using a PC security product to ensure its full removal.
