Win32/Boaxxe.BB is a detection for BrowserSafeGuard, a browser hijacker that pretends that its functions help your browser by blocking unsafe websites. Malware researchers have found limited evidence of any real security benefits from Win32/Boaxxe.BB, which usually is classified as a browser hijacker that exerts an unhealthy level of control over the user's Web-surfing habits. Like other members of the Boaxxe family, Win32/Boaxxe.BB is compatible with Internet Explorer but may affect other brands of browsers, and, usually, should be deleted by anti-malware utilities whenever you may find Win32/Boaxxe.BB.

Win32/Boaxxe.BB: the Ax Chop Delivered to Your Control of Your Browser

The profitability of unwanted browser add-ons often is inversely proportional to their desirability as products, which is why malware experts were not startled to see browser hijackers re-branding themselves as 'products' such as BrowserSafeGuard. Win32/Boaxxe.BB is one of several detections for the latter, which claims to be able to block browser-based threats from your PC by using proxy features. However, its real security features are trivial to nonexistent, while there has been substantial evidence of Win32/Boaxxe.BB controlling its users' browsers in non-beneficial ways.

Win32/Boaxxe.BB has all of the expected attributes of a Potentially Unwanted Program: bundle-based distribution methods, attempts to block its own deletion and even randomly-generated file names that make identifying it difficult. However, Win32/Boaxxe.BB has a particular reputation for being a browser hijacker that may redirect Internet Explorer to random websites. Some of the most common formats of browser hijacks involve search redirects and homepage hijacks, but Win32/Boaxxe.BB's proxy-based functions allow Win32/Boaxxe.BB to redirect your browser to other sites under other, overly broad conditions.

Getting a Safe Browser that Goes Where You Want It

Win32/Boaxxe.BB exploits Web surfers' interest in Web security to turn them into willing victims of redirects to other sites, and shouldn't be mistaken for a legitimate security tool. Although Win32/Boaxxe.BB only is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Program, Win32/Boaxxe.BB and other members of Win32/Boaxxe should be deleted in almost any conceivable circumstance. Although there are some legitimate uses that may be found with different proxy service-based programs, you may find all of these uses with reputable applications that aren't widely considered to be detrimental to your browser's security or performance. In particular, programs that are distributed with randomly-named components always should be eyed with a minimum of suspicion.

Due to its use of randomly-named files, the simplest means of deleting Win32/Boaxxe.BB is via anti-malware tools that can detect Win32/Boaxxe.BB, regardless of the names Win32/Boaxxe.BB uses. In similar cases, malware researchers also would recommend detecting the bundle-based installers that are the usual culprits for a PUP's installation. If installing software from a potentially compromised source is unavoidable, you always should consider scanning a downloaded file to determine whether or not there is an inclusion of Win32/Boaxxe.BB BHOs.
