'Windows Product Key Failure' Technical Support Scam

Posted: November 16, 2017

The 'Windows Product Key Failure' technical support scam is a classic scheme in which users are exposed to a fraudulent Web page that may contain multiple pop-ups, alerts, warnings, and other elements, which tell them that their systems are at risk, and they need to take measures to prevent further problems. Often, these tactics work by scaring users into thinking that they are infected by a threat, but the authors of the 'Windows Product Key Failure' technical support scam have opted to use a different approach, which tricks potential victims into thinking that they need to verify their Windows key by calling certified Microsoft support experts. In addition to the misleading warning, the users also will see a field to enter their Windows Product Key. However, this field does not validate the entered value and will always display an error. In addition to this, the trick also might allow the con artists to harvest Windows product keys from their victims.

After the user enters their product key, the site will spawn a warning, which tells them that the key is not valid, and they need to contact the Microsoft support by calling 888-335-0661. However, this phone number is not linked to Microsoft so that you can rest assured that calling it will not get you in touch with a credible computer technician. Instead, the number is used by one or more hoaxes, and the con artists who operate it may lie to callers to convince them to pay money for software or services they do not need.

The best way to keep yourself safe from tactics like this one is to remember that Web browser pop-ups aren't reliable sources of information regarding your computer's health and security. Websites that claim to provide such information and tell you to call a specific phone line are likely to be part of a tactic, and they should not be trusted.
