Window User Manager

Posted: September 21, 2016

After Window Quick Manager and Windows Route Manager, malware researchers have identified another dubious application developed and distributed by RangeSoft, a shady company whose name is linked to Potentially Unwanted Programs mostly, which exhibit more than suspicious behavior. The latest addition to the list of PUPs associated with RangeSoft is Window User Manager, a piece of software that may often be installed without the user's knowledge. Just like previous identified RangeSoft products, Window User Manager also does not have an official website or download mirror. Instead, this software may rely on software bundles to distribute itself to non-suspecting users that might be tricked into installing undesired software. Potentially Unwanted Programs such as Window User Manager may use misleading installation instructions, fake advertising, and other dubious tricks to get people to agree to install the application.

Once installed, Window User Manager does not create any shortcuts or make any visible changes to your computer's appearance and behavior. However, the application does create a Windows Service that will always start as soon as Windows boots. The service is responsible for launching Window User Manager's components, which may establish background connections to various advertising networks. It is plausible that Window User Manager may be part of a click-fraud scheme that uses random computers to generate traffic toward particular advertisements and websites artificially. To do that, the PUP may also launch stealth copies of Internet Explorer and use them to access particular pages. While these actions are not threatening, they are very suspicious, and you can rest assured that any application that exhibits such behavior should be removed immediately. Usually, Window User Manager can be found in the list of installed programs and removed from there. Naturally, there is also an easier way to ger rid of it by scanning your computer with reputable anti-malware.
