'YOU ARE THE CHOSEN!' Pop-Ups

Posted: January 20, 2020

The 'YOU ARE THE CHOSEN!' pop-ups are fraudulent messages that may appear on shady websites that users are likely to encounter when browsing pages linked to the propagation of dubious content such as adult sites, pirated media, pirated games/software, torrent trackers, etc. The pages that host the 'YOU ARE THE CHOSEN!' pop-ups may often say that the users have won an amazing reward, and they must follow the instructions to claim it. The page is often accompanied by a fake comment section, which contains reviews from previous winners, and, as you can probably guess, the reviews are flawless.

The 'YOU ARE THE CHOSEN!' pop-ups may continue the tactic in several ways – sometimes, the users may be prompted to allow the page to display notifications in their Web browser. Doing this would result in a large number of advertisements being displayed via your browser's notifications panel. Another thing that the 'YOU ARE THE CHOSEN!' pop-ups may ask the user to do is to provide personal information such as email, name, phone, address, etc. The private data collected by the fraudulent website may be used for marketing purposes.

Last but not least, sometimes, these schemes may ask the users to confirm their identity and phone number by sending a text message to a specific number – these are the nastiest tactic types since the text message may often cost more than the page says. You should never provide your phone number to unknown websites if they came out of nowhere and claim that you won a great prize, especially.

The good news is that seeing the 'YOU ARE THE CHOSEN!' pop-ups is not a symptom of a malware issue. To get rid of the fraudulent page, you should simply close the pop-ups it spawned, and then close the tab that contains the bogus website.
