Speakers Crackling on Windows

Posted: February 22, 2021

Many Windows users have recently complained online about unexpected and unexplainable problems with their laptop or computer speakers. It seems that the problem is likely to be owed to a recent update, which modified some of Windows' audio settings. Keep in mind that this may not be the cause of the problem in all cases – it is possible that the speakers might be having hardware issues, and changing your Windows settings would do nothing to solve this. Regardless, you should try the following troubleshooting tips to fix the speakers cracking on Windows issue:

Improve the Windows Sound Format

Right-click the speaker icon in the Windows Notifications Area, and then click on 'Playback Devices.' Select your primary audio device from the 'Playback' tab, and then press 'Properties.' Select the 'Advanced Tab' and use the dropdown menu to set the format to '32 bit, 44100 Hz (Studio Quality).' Apply the changes. You may need to restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Run the Windows Audio Troubleshooter

Open the Start Menu and head to the Settings section. Search for 'troubleshot' using the search box, and then choose to 'Run the troubleshooter' for audio devices. Follow the on-screen instructions to allow Windows to try and fix the issue automatically.

Disable Audio Enhancements

Right-click the speaker icon in the notifications area, and select 'Playback Devices.' Choose your primary device, and then press 'Properties.' Choose the 'Enhancements' tab and make sure that the checkbox 'Disable all enhancements' is ticked. Apply the changes and restart the computer.

Reinstall Audio Drivers

Running the latest version of your audio drivers is also recommended. You can fetch the latest update from your sound chip manufacturer's official website, or by using automated driver maintenance tools.
