WiFi not Working on macOS After BigSur Update
macOS users recently received a new and intriguing update called BigSur (or Big Sur.) It introduces a wide range of optimizations and new features but, unfortunately, plenty of users also experienced unexpected issues with their computer's network connectivity. The problem in question concerns the WiFi network – many users report that the WiFi was not working on their macOS system after applying the BigSur update. If you are facing this problem, then you should try the following troubleshooting tips:
Reset Your Router and Computer
Resetting hardware should be the first thing to try whenever you experience any computer trouble. You can reset your router either through its administrator panel, or by simply powering it off, and then turning it on again.
Try Other WiFi Networks
If you have an alternative WiFi network available, then you should try connecting to it – depending on your phone, you might be able to start a WiFi hotspot using your mobile data. If the problem persists, then it is certain that the problem is in the computer or laptop.
Apply Software Updates
Run macOS' updater by clicking the Apple logo at the top, and picking System Preferences -> Software Updates. If there are any pending updates, install them.
Reset the System Management Controller
If you are using a desktop macOS device, then you need to simply turn it off, and pull the power plug out for at least 15 seconds. Plug it back in, and start the device.
Laptop users, on the other hand, will need to turn off the laptop. After this, hold the key combination Control + Option + Shift for at least 7-8 seconds. After the time has passed, press and hold the 'Power' button while holding the other three keys as well – wait for at least 10 seconds before releasing the buttons. Finally, turn the laptop back on.
Create a New WiFi Configuration
Go to Finder, and create a new folder with a name of your choice – for example 'Backup WiFi.' Select the 'Go' menu from the top bar, and then select 'Go to Folder.' Enter/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/.Select the following files, and drag them to the 'Backup WiFi' folder you created:
- NetworkInterfaces.plist
- com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist
- com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
- preferences.plist
Restart the computer, and then enable WiFi. Enter your WiFi credentials when prompted to do so.
