TR/Dropper.Gen

Posted: July 27, 2009

If you find a result of TR/Dropper.Gen popping up on your scanner, you should know that you're dealing with a newer Trojan infection that hasn't been completely identified by some or all anti-malware products. TR/Dropper.Gen is a generic label applied to Trojan-based malware, which are capable of downloading and installing files on your computer without your permission. Evidence of an infection by TR/Dropper.Gen is a high-level threat to security and can also place the computer in danger of attacks by other malware or remote attackers. You should always try to delete TR/Dropper.Gen by way of whatever means are necessary to get the job done.

Why Even a Generic Trojan is Something to Beware Of

TR/Dropper.Gen and more well-defined Trojans all share common characteristics that cause them to be incredibly problematic to infected systems:

  • TR/Dropper.Gen will download or 'drop' other programs and files onto your system. Usually, these are malicious in nature and may record keyboard input, damage system files, hijack your web browser or cause pop-ups.
  • Trojans like TR/Dropper.Gen will also harm your security settings in several ways, which makes it easier for them to download malware. The most common forms of attack are to disable the system's firewall, open ports without permission and automatically shut down security applications.
  • Trojan-based malware is usually implemented in a way that makes it easier for remote attackers to take over the computer. Remote attacks can entire dominate control over input to the system and may be used to turn the poor machine into just another zombie in a DDoS botnet army.
  • Different Trojans, including some versions of TR/Dropper.Gen are able to perform other malicious acts. Some may spread through removable devices or networks as a worm would, while others can record keyboard input through keylogger functions. The majority of Trojans will have several other hostile functions besides dropping malware.

Your Half of the Bargain - Finishing What TR/Dropper.Gen Started

Obviously, allowing TR/Dropper.Gen to cause all these problems indefinitely isn't any way to enjoy a functioning computer! An important step in successfully deleting TR/Dropper.Gen is to have fully up to date anti-malware applications. Security applications that aren't updated will have a difficult time identifying new threats, which TR/Dropper.Gen usually is by definition.

If you're sure you have the right applications and updates to remove TR/Dropper.Gen you should be certain the Trojan isn't running in the background when you attempt to exterminate TR/Dropper.Gen. Running malware will commonly dodge deletion attempts and return the next time you reboot your computer, either through rootkit techniques or registry-based exploits. Starting the computer up into Safe Mode is the best way to prevent most malware like TR/Dropper.Gen from starting, letting you delete them without any traces left behind on the system.

My system also infected with this virus. It was creating exe files in sub folder with subfolder name. It spread to complete system in folders & subfolders, surprisingly it did not infect to C drive.
I have successfully removed it by Frree Avira Antivir program. The anti-virus worked well and now I am free of the virus.

I am trying to remove TRDopper.gen which has infected my PC. I am using Windows XP on a Dell 530 Inspiron.
When I click on REGEDIT I am told Windows cannot open this file. Windows needs to know what file created it. However, I have tried both using the internet and manually to provide this information with no effect. Any attempt to downlaod a new file/programme from my website (google Chrome) results in a return to my starting point.
    How can I resolve this?
    Please advise. Thank you

Well i would love to follow those steps that ure giving there, just one little problem:

    - I cant download any malware scanner or even run online ones (the troyan closes the download and dont let me use online ActiveX components)

    - I cant open the Task Manager (nothing happens when i press Ctrl+Alt+Del, again the troyan working here)

    - I cant go to "Start/Run" (im starting to love this troyan, the bar is gone, i can go to start with the keyboard shortcut anyways, but theres no Run there, actually, theres nothing there, nothing at all, just "Close Sesion and Turn Off".

I think i found a very well made variation of this Troyan.

Trdropper.gen type virus' are almost always not a virus at all but a keygen or crack which are seen by all modern virus scanners as unwanted programs in a bid to halt piracy. Any so called virus detected that has .gen after it is usually a false positive. and can be safely ignored if you still want they keygen or crack. Beware of false information from large corperation, they will always try to manipulate you.
