Windows Vista Repair

Posted: June 17, 2011

ScreenshotWindows Vista Repair is a Vista-specific clone of other rogue defragmenter programs that imitate helpful system error-detecting features. Just like other threats that are closely related to it, Windows Vista Repair creates fake alerts to fool you into purchasing an activation code, so that Windows Vista Repair can remove problems that aren't really on your PC. Windows Vista Repair can also step up Windows Vista Repair's attacks by changing file-viewing functions, hijacking your browser or stopping other programs dead in their tracks. Removing Windows Vista Repair with a well-suited anti-virus or security program is a necessity to keep your PC healthy and secure.

The Top-Priority Threats That a Windows Vista Repair Creates in Its Wake

Windows Vista Repair pretends to be a defragger to get onto your computer in the first place, and may be installed accidentally or by a Trojan. Unlike a real defragger, Windows Vista Repair will pretend to offer many vaguely-related functions that involve checking for a variety of errors on your computer. These features will trigger alerts and warnings every time you try to defrag your PC with Windows Vista Repair.

However, the real danger in Windows Vista Repair lies in the features that Windows Vista Repair keeps hidden:

  • Windows Vista Repair can attack Windows Explorer (the default file and folder-viewing application in Windows) to make it look like that folders are empty or you have the wrong files. It should be stressed that although Windows Vista Repair makes it look like files are missing or in disarray, the files themselves are just fine. You can verify their locations by using a different file-viewing program that Windows Vista Repair isn't programmed to attack.
  • Your web browser may also be hijacked, both to force you towards the Windows Vista Repair website, and to stop you from visiting security-related websites. Browser hijacks can change your search results or homepage, redirect you to an unfamiliar website, create pop-ups, create fake error screens or play audio advertisements.
  • Other programs like Windows Task Manager or anti-virus scanners can also be attacked by Windows Vista Repair, typically to prevent them from running in the first place.

The Lesser Problems That Trail Along with Windows Vista Repair

Substantially less threatening but more annoying is Windows Vista Repair's predilection for creating fake error pop-ups on a regular basis, without ever trying to detect real threats. Well-known pop-ups that are related to Windows Vista Repair include:

Critical Error
A critical error has occurred while indexing data stored on hard drive. System restart required.

Critical Error
RAM memory usage is critically high. RAM memory failure.

Critical Error
Hard Drive not found. Missing hard drive.

Critical Error
Windows can't find hard disk space. Hard drive error

Critical Error!
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file System32496A8300. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware.

Critical Error!
Damaged hard drive clusters detected. Private data is at risk.

System Restore
The system has been restored after a critical error. Data integrity and hard drive integrity verification required.

Threats that are identical to Windows Vista Repair are also being distributed with slight name variations like Windows XP Repair, Windows Vista Restore, Windows XP Restore and Windows 7 Restore. You can fake a registration process with any of these rogue security programs, including Windows Vista Repair, by using the code '8475082234984902023718742058948.'

However, regardless of all else, you should always remove Windows Vista Repair as soon as possible, preferably with an anti-malware program of high repute.
