Barboza Ransomware

Posted: March 17, 2021

The Matrix Ransomware family continues to provide low-skilled cybercriminals with the ability to create and use a unique piece of ransomware in a matter of hours. The latest malware project to be based on Matrix is called Barboza, and, unfortunately, victims who fall victim to its attack will have a very difficult time when it comes to restoring access to their data. The Barboza Ransomware is programmed to damage a wide range of files by encrypting their contents. Unfortunately, reversing the encryption it uses is impossible without using the unique decryption key the malware creates for each victim – this piece of data is stored on the servers of Barboza Ransomware's creators.

Recognizing the Barboza Ransomware's attack is easy, because it will make a noticeable change to the names of locked files by adding the suffix '-.[barboza40@yahoo.com].' It also drops a ransom note called '!_!WHERE-IS-MY-FILES!_!.rtf' on the desktop.

Protecting yourself from ransomware attacks is very important in this day and age – this type of malware is very profitable for cybercriminals, and such attacks have been becoming more and more common in the past couple of years. To keep your data and system protected by the Barboza Ransomware and similar threats, you should use an up-to-date antivirus tool, as well as maintain up-to-date backups of your important files.

If the Barboza Ransomware has damaged your data, you should not consider asking the criminals for help. Instead, run an antivirus scanner to prevent the malware from causing more issues. After this, try to recover your data by using popular data recovery software or by experimenting with other reputable data recovery measures.
