Beets Ransomware

Posted: May 30, 2019

The Beets Ransomware is a threatening program that can encrypt a large number of files in just a few minutes. Of course, the authors of this file-encryption Trojan did not develop this threat to just wreak havoc – they plan to offer a decryptor to all of their victims. However, there is a catch – their offer is not free, and they want to receive a hefty Bitcoin compensation in exchange for the decryption program.

If the Beets Ransomware manages to sneak onto an unprotected computer, it may encrypt the contents of a large variety of images, documents, videos, archives, and other file formats immediately. Whenever this ransomware locks a file, it will change its extension by using the pattern ‘.id-.[vombombom@cock.li].’ Just like any other ransomware, this one also drops a ransom message to provide the victim with file-decryption instructions and contact information – previous variants of the Dharma Ransomware have used the file ‘FILES ENCRYPTED.txt’ for this, and it is likely that the Beets Ransomware is behaving in the same way.

We would not advise you to cooperate with the attackers since they are anonymous cybercriminals who may try to collect your money and leave you with a hard drive full of locked files. The correct thing to do when handling ransomware is to make use of a reputable anti-malware software suite that will dispose of the harmful files. Unfortunately, this is not enough to undo the damage done by the Beets Ransomware, and victims of this file-locker may need to try out alternative data recovery techniques and tools that may not always work flawlessly.
