Bitcoin Collector Scam

Cryptocurrencies have attracted a lot of attention in the past few years, and many not so tech-savvy people have opted to explore Bitcoin, Ethereum, Monero, and other popular cryptocurrencies as investment options. Of course, the influx of new users means that many fraudsters also are looking into the opportunities that the flourishing cryptocurrency market provides them with – one of these groups of fraudsters is behind the Bitcoin Collector Scam, a new ‘service’ that has gained a lot of attention in May 2019.

According to the official website of the ‘Bitcoin Collector’ service, all users who register and use the software will receive up to $45/day in Bitcoin. They also will receive a personal referral link that other users can use to register for the service, and the referral will receive compensation – up to 3 Ethereum a day (about $800.) Sounds like easy money, doesn’t it? Regretfully, it is too good to be true, and malware researchers have identified a plethora of issues with the service and software that the Bitcoin Collector campaign supplies.

First of all, the software does not mine for any cryptocurrency despite claiming to do. Instead, it will use the chance to launch the BulbaCrypt Ransomware in the background, or in other cases, make use the Baldr info stealer, which will attempt to extract saved login credentials. Since the con artists are claiming to be legit, provide a fake VirusTotal scan of their program, and motivate users to distribute the software, they may end up infecting thousands of computers worldwide.

Remember, there are no free cryptocurrency generation tools, and any program or service that claims to do so is likely to be fake and potentially harmful. The Bitcoin Collector Scam has gained a lot of traction on social media so that be careful about these referral links and do not trust this service.
