'.cryptes File Extension' Ransomware

Posted: July 26, 2018

The '.cryptes File Extension' Ransomware is a file-locker, which is not linked to any ransomware families that malware researchers have analyzed in the past. Despite being a fairly new threat, its authors have managed to implement a fully functional file-encryption routine and, sadly, this means that the '.cryptes File Extension' Ransomware is quite destructive once it manages to infect a computer. It encrypts a huge variety of files, and the only way to get them back is to pay a ransom sum to the author. However, we would not advise you to do this since sending money to anonymous cybercriminals is almost guaranteed to end badly. Many ransomware victims opted to pay the ransom fee in the past, but they did not get anything in return.

After the '.cryptes File Extension' Ransomware carries out its attack, it will leave the victim with a hard drive full of encrypted documents, images, songs, videos, archives, spreadsheets, and other files that will be marked with the '.cryptes' file extension (e.g. 'document.xlsx' will be renamed to 'document.xlsx.cryptes' once it is locked).

Just like other file-encryption Trojans, this one also leaves a ransom message as soon as the attack is completed. The victim will find the entire ransom message within the file 'HOW TO DECRYPT ALL MY FILES.txt,' which is usually placed on the desktop. Its contents reveal that the attackers are willing to decrypt up to five files free of charge to prove that there are trustworthy. While we would advise you to take advantage of this offer, you should not forget that you must not agree to send them any money since the risk of getting tricked is still too big. The perpetrators have not specified the amount of money they are planning to ask for, but they do request to be contacted via 'dekode@qq.com,' 'supdecrypt@foxmail.com' or 'supportdecryption@cock.li' for further instructions. The advice is to dispose of the '.cryptes File Extension' Ransomware's malevolent files with the help of a trustworthy anti-malware software suite and then attempt to recover their data via alternative file restoration methods and utilities.
