Genesis Ransomware

Posted: December 14, 2020

The Genesis Ransomware is a file-encryption Trojan designed to cause long-term damage to the files it accesses on the compromised system. The files, which this ransomware locks will be tagged with the '.genesis' extension at the end of their original names. Another change that the Genesis Ransomware brings is the creation of the document '!HELP!.txt,' which is usually stored on the desktop after the attack is executed.

The destructive nature of Genesis Ransomware is not a surprise because its creators want to convince their victims to purchase a paid decryption tool, which costs hundreds of dollars. The criminals' messages say that they are the only ones in possession of a decryption tool and warn their victims to stay away from alternative data recovery options.

The Genesis Ransomware asks victims to contact either genesishelp@mail.ee or genesishelp@cock.li for additional information. The attackers also say that they have stolen some non-encrypted data and threaten to leak it to the media and online if the victim does not agree to pay a ransom fee.

It is an inadequate idea to try to co-operate with ransomware creators because they may often try to tactic you by asking for more and more money or by outright ignoring you after they receive a payment. If the Genesis Ransomware has damaged your data, we suggest you run an anti-malware tool to remove it. After the threat is gone, you can proceed to run the alternative data recovery software.
