Happy Ransomware

Posted: February 22, 2021

The Happy Ransomware file-locker has been around for over a year, and it continues to threaten users to this very day. This threat is meant to encrypt the files it finds on your hard drive, and then drop a message that tells you what you need to do to decrypt your data. Often, ransomware creators extort their victims for money, but Happy Ransomware's creators have a different approach - instead of demanding a ransom payment, they advise the victims to decompile the ransomware and reverse-engineer the encryption algorithm. According to them, recovering files locked by the Happy Ransomware is easy, and this threat is meant to make users familiar with the dangers of ransomware attacks, and convince them to take the appropriate measures to prevent this from happening again.

Unfortunately, users who fall victim to the Happy Ransomware may have a hard time recovering their files, because the encryption algorithm of the threat is not as easy to crack as its creators make it out to be. The damaged files are marked with the '.happy' extension, and victims also will find the ransom note 'HIT BY RANSOMWARE.TXT.'

The attackers do not provide any contact details, so it would be impossible to ask them for help. The advice to victims of the Happy Ransomware is to run a reputable anti-virus scanner to terminate the file-encryption Trojan, and then look for free decryption options online. The best way to recover from ransomware attacks is to restore from a backup – if this option is not available to you, you may need to explore alternative file recovery options.
