Igal Ransomware

Posted: December 28, 2020

There is no holiday break for cybercriminals who continue to flood the Internet with countless cyber threats that can cause all kinds of damage to infected computers. The Igal Ransomware is one of the latest samples to catch the attention of cybersecurity experts, and they have determined that this ransomware shares feature with the well-known STOP Ransomware. Unfortunately, members of the STOP family of file-lockers are impossible to decrypt via free utilities, and their victims may often need to resort to alternative data recovery options.

The Igal Ransomware is likely to be delivered to victims via fake downloads, pirated media and software, or other content served by non-trustworthy websites, emails, and social media pages. The best way to keep your computer and files safe is to invest in reputable antivirus protection, as well as to consider maintaining up-to-date backups of your most important files. This way, you will be able to recover them even in case of a ransomware attack.

The primary purpose of the Igal Ransomware is to encrypt files and prevent you from accessing them. However, it will also perform additional tasks such as deleting Shadow Volume Copies, disabling the system restore service, and marking the names of damaged files by using the '.igal' extension. One of the last changes that the Igal Ransomware brings is to drop the '_readme.txt' message on the desktop. This file contains information from the attackers and reveals that:

  • They ask for a ransom payment of $490 but threaten to double it.
  • They use the emails helpmanager@mail.ch and restoremanager@airmail.cc for contact.
  • They ask to be paid via Bitcoin, and offer free decryption for one file.

Trying to purchase a decryption service from Igal Ransomware's creators is a poor choice, and you should not consider it. It is recommended to run an anti-malware scanner to ensure the full removal of Igal Ransomware's components, and then try out other data recovery tools and options.
