Lockedfile Ransomware

Posted: December 31, 2020

The Lockedfile Ransomware is a file-encryption Trojan designed to lock users out of their files and then extort them for money through a ransom note. The authors of the Lockedfile Ransomware deploy a ransom note called 'HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt,' and it also spawns a fake error message, which also contains a message from the perpetrators. It seems that the Lockedfile Ransomware may be an unfinished project because it urges victims to send an SMS message containing 'XXXX' to the number 'YYYY' – these are placeholders for a text message and phone number, clearly.

While the note of the Lockedfile Ransomware may be unfinished, the file-locking mechanism is fully complete. It is able to encrypt the contents of various types of media, documents, archives, databases and many other files. The good news is that the Lockedfile Ransomware has a file-encryption algorithm identical to the one of the Xorist Ransomware and this may make it possible to run a free decryption utility.

Victims of the Lockedfile Ransomware should disregard the message of the extortionists and, instead, they need to execute an anti-malware tool to remove the file-encryption Trojan's contents. Once the malware is gone, they can proceed to experiment with alternative data recovery tools or to run the free 'Xorist Decryptor,' which might help restore the data to normal.
