MRAT

MRAT is a threatening application that has been used by a wide range of cybercriminals over the past five years. The malware is often deployed alone, but it may be used in combination with other implants, which serve various purposes. Recently, cybersecurity experts identified a brand new campaign designed to deliver the MRAT to Android users using the Clast82 Malware. What is even more worrisome is that the threatening programs were found on the official Google Play Store, and tens of thousands of people might have interacted with them.

While the majority of active Clast82 infections were seen using the AlienBot Malware, the MRAT was also active on a significant fraction of the infected devices. It is impossible to tell whether your device is infected by MRAT or not unless you use reputable ant-virus software to keep you safe. Threats like this one often mimic valid Android components or popular software and hide their files in multiple directories to make their removal more difficult.

Once active, the MRAT may provide criminals with the ability to spy on the user's activity, steal files, read text messages, hijack contacts, and more. Thankfully, old threats like the MRAT are easily detectable by modern Android ant-virus products – we suggest using additional security tools to ensure that your mobile devices are safe from attacks like the one described above.
