Multiplug

Multiplug is an advertising software platform that has generated numerous variants, most of which may have associations with potentially unsafe changes to your browser or the non-consensual loading of Web content. When accurately identified, Multiplug should not be detected as being a threat, but Multiplug may place your PC at risk for other, browser-based security issues and may provide no advantages for the user. No matter what version of this adware is on your browser, malware experts have found uninstalling Multiplug with an anti-adware product as the safest recourse.

All of the Multiple Browser Extensions that Want to Advertise to You

The aims of adware rarely show meaningful creativity or variety in their functions, but their forms may show the opposite inclination with regular rotations of brand names. Multiplug is one of the baseline development platforms from which well-defined adware add-ons may launch themselves. Although Multiplug add-ons are theoretically compatible with most browsers, malware experts found the majority of them loading into Google's Chrome, specifically, as extensions.

Multiplug extensions may circulate as Web products for 'improving' your quality-of-life by blocking Youtube advertisements, wiping your browser history, or providing other, browser-based features. However, their product names and installation routines rarely mention the primary function of Multiplug as a development resource; injecting advertisements into your browser. All of the following issues are consequences of Multiplug installations that malware experts have seen in previous variants:

  • Your browser's default search engine, tab page or homepage settings may lock themselves to an unwanted website. Although most such cases may involve Multiplug promoting an advertising website disguising its advertisements as search results, some abuses of these features have allowed remote attackers to redirect computer users to threatening content.
  • Multiplug also may limit your permissions over which extensions you may install on your browser (or uninstall).
  • Some variants Multiplug also may uninstall any previously installed add-ons, toolbars or extensions.
  • Multiplug may monitor your browsing history, including which websites you load and what search terms you use. This data may be transferred to third parties automatically.
  • Web pages may be modified locally, inserting additional advertisements or replacing built-in advertisement content with content sponsored by the Multiplug extension.

Multiplug adware requires no consent for any of these functions, which your extension most likely may promote as privacy or Web security-based 'features' to your benefit.

Yanking out the Plug on Advertisementgs from Multiplug

There is a high range of brand names and products associated with Multiplug, many of whom may lack up-front business models, documentation or installation practices. This variability means that most PC users never will identify Multiplug until after their security solutions detect Multiplug or its installer on their systems. Although Chrome users are particularly at risk of being affected by a majority of confirmed Multiplug variants, similar adware products are just as easily able to hijack other browsers. Examples of some of the brands with known Multiplug associations include Gosavenow Ads, DeallSter, Nicenfree, TheAdBlock, UTAdRReMoovalAppa and Ytnoads.

Trojans and other threats may be capable of installing advertising extensions, but software bundlers are the principal means by which adware, including Multiplug adware, may install itself on new computers. Instead than deleting Multiplug with an anti-adware tool after it modifies your browser, scanning potentially threatening files can detect a bundled installation before Multiplug gains the chance to take control of your Web-surfing environment.
