Infected PCs: 21
First Seen: January 12, 2016
OS(es) Affected: Windows

The NanoLocker Ransomware is an encrypting Trojan that attacks the files of its victims. Instead of deleting them permanently, this cyber threat modifies the core structure in such a way that the PC user will not be able to open them anymore. This process is called 'encryption,' and is done via strong cryptography. To unlock the affected data, the victim must get a key. It is stored on distant servers, and there is no trace of it on the PC. The only way to receive it would be to pay a ransom to the culprits. Security specialists advise strongly against doing so because even if they get your cash, the hackers may still not send the decryption key. At this point, the user may be in a particularly bad spot because the NanoLocker Ransomware locks all files that may have value. After it sneaks in, the NanoLocker Ransomware scans the PC to find all photos, images, Office documents, music files and videos. Once their extension is changed, there may be no way to open them. This fact means that the users may lose their work forever. The only files that remain unaffected have an important purpose – such as launching the Operating System (OS). After the encryption takes place, even if you delete the threat, the process will not unlock the files. For this reason, the experts strongly advise PC users to be careful not to allow the infection to occur in the first place. The NanoLocker Ransomware may be introduced to the system by some compromised email attachments, so don't open any messages from people you don't know. The threat also may appear if you download any software from unverified platforms, even supposed Java/Adobe updates. The most reliable protection is to have a powerful anti-malware application that can intercept and prevent the installation of malicious programs like the NanoLocker Ransomware.
