Proticc Ransomware

Posted: July 26, 2018

The Proticc Ransomware is a HiddenTear-based file-locker, which appears to still be in development since the authors have uploaded an unfinished version whose execution also generates debugging information. Despite being in an incomplete state, the encryption algorithm has already been weaponized, and the Proticc Ransomware is capable of encrypting files swiftly. The good news is that since the author of the Proticc Ransomware has opted to use the HiddenTear source code, it is very likely that the key-generation algorithm is not a reliable one, and the victims of the Proticc Ransomware might be able to recover from the attack with the help of free decryption software.

After the Proticc Ransomware executes its attack, it is programmed to display the ransom message in a new program window, which also contains a countdown timer, which tells the victims how much time they have to pay the ransom sum before their files are damaged permanently. Usually, ransomware authors give their victims at least 24 hours to complete the payment, but it seems that the Proticc Ransomware's developers are in a hurry and they state that the victims have only one hour before their files are wiped. The good news is that the Proticc Ransomware does not delete any data so that this warning should be ignored since it is nothing but a simple scare tactic, which is meant to frighten the users and get them to pay the money.

The advice to the victims of the Proticc Ransomware is to disregard the ransom message and use an updated anti-malware scanner to delete all files that the Proticc Ransomware brought immediately. The removal of the Proticc Ransomware will not get the damaged files back so that you will need to use a free HiddenTear decryption tool to solve this issue.
