RYK Ransomware

Posted: September 5, 2019

A new file-encryption Trojan has been detected by malware researchers, and it has been given the name RYK Ransomware due to the file extension it appends to the names of the files it encrypts – '.RYK.' Unfortunately, if you have had your data encrypted by this threat, then you might not have many data recovery opportunities ahead of you. So far, the RYK Ransomware's file-encryption routine seems invincible, so it will not be possible to rely on free decryption software to recover your files.

Ryuk Ransomware Resurfaces With a New Extension
There are many similarities between the code and ransom note that the RYK Ransomware and Ryuk Ransomware use, so it is very likely that the former might be a modified variant of the infamous Ryuk Ransomware. Sadly, this is not good news since the Ryuk project has been around for a while, and no-one has managed to crack its encryption yet.

It is possible that the files linked to the RYK Ransomware's activity might be distributed via bogus email attachments or fake downloads that may be delivered to users via malicious ads or dubious pages – it is recommended to avoid downloading dodgy files from the Internet, since this is an easy way to introduce malware to your system. The best way to ensure your computer's security is to use a sophisticated and up-to-date antivirus software suite that will stay vigilant for suspicious activity from any of the programs running.

The Hefty Demands of the Attackers Are Not Acceptable
If the RYK Ransomware is not eliminated on time, it may encrypt a large portion of your data and add the '.RYK' extension to all locked files. Another change that it introduces is the creation of the 'RyukReadMe.html' ransom note whose contents are very simple – just instructions to message papinsdasun1982@protonmail.com or cestidemet1983@protonmail.com for further details. We assure you that messaging the perpetrators is not a good idea since they will begin to extort you for money by promising to provide you with a decryptor as soon as you pay them. Of course, sending money to the cybercrooks behind this threat is a terrible solution since they may scam you easily.

We advise victims of the RYK Ransomware to dispose of the file-locker with the use of an anti-malware tool, and then research for alternative data recovery options. It is also recommended to preserve the '.RYK' files because there is a glimmer of hope that a free decryptor may be available in the future.
