SySS Ransomware

Posted: November 18, 2019

The Dharma Ransomware has made a comeback in 2019, although the project seemed to be dead for a while after the original developers opted to release all decryption keys for free. However, we have seen dozens of new variants appear in 2019, and the latest of them goes by the name the SySS Ransomware. This file-locker is impossible to decrypt via free utilities, and this leaves its victims with very limited data recovery options.

The corrupted binary that carries the SySS Ransomware's code may be distributed via pirated software and media, fake downloads, fake software updates, or compromised email attachments – to protect your computer and your files from threats like this one, you should be more careful with the websites you browse. In addition to this, it is strongly recommended to keep your system protected by a reputable anti-virus software suite that receives regular updates. Failing to stop the SySS Ransomware's attack may result in long-term damage being caused to many of your important files.

Just like other Dharma Ransomware variants, the SySS Ransomware also will aim to encrypt files with potentially valuable contents - documents, spreadsheets, databases, archives, images, backups, etc. After the SySS Ransomware is finished encrypting a file's contents, it will manipulate its name by adding the extension '.id-.[syspentest@aol.com].SySS.' The last change it makes to compromised systems it to create two ransom notes that can be found under the names 'Info.hta' and 'FILES ENCRYPTED.txt.'

You can rest assured that trusting the authors of the SySS Ransomware is a bad idea - they want to be paid a lot of money in exchange for their decryption program, and they do not offer reliable proof that you will get anything after you send the ransom payment. The only sure way to recover from the SySS Ransomware's attack is to restore the original copies of your files from an up-to-date backup.

If you do not have a reserve copy of your data, it is recommended to look into alternative file recovery options – however, keep in mind that they may not always deliver satisfying results. Paying the ransom fee is a risky choice, and you may end up losing not just your files, but your money as well.
