VaPo Ransomware

Posted: February 17, 2021

The VaPo Ransomware is a new file-locker reported by cybersecurity researchers. The goal of this malware is to lock its victims out of their files and then try to convince them to pay a ransom fee. According to VaPo Ransomware's creators, victims who opt to send 0.04 Bitcoin to their wallet will receive a working decryptor that will get their files back in a matter of minutes. However, the criminals offer no proof that they have what it takes to unlock your files – it is likely that victims who pay the ransom fee will end up tricked.

The VaPo Ransomware may be distributed online with the use of fake downloads, threatening email attachments and other fraudulent content. We advise you to stick to browsing safe websites, as well as avoid interacting with pirated content. Last but not least, you need to use a trustworthy anti-virus software suite at all times.

If you have fallen victim to the VaPo Ransomware attack, you will notice the extension '.VaPo' extension added to the names of your important files. Another visible file change that this ransomware brings is creating the message 'HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt' on the desktop. The note asks the victim to pay 0.04 Bitcoin and also instructs them to contact vapotin@tuta.io for additional information.

Unfortunately, free decryption tools for the VaPo Ransomware are not available. However, some 3rd-party data recovery tools might be able to restore access to some of the damaged files. Keep in mind that the only guaranteed way to recover your files is to restore them from a recent backup. Before you try any data recovery techniques, you need to use a reputable anti-virus software suite to terminate the VaPo Ransomware.
