W32/CTX is a worm that will be received in an e-mail as an attachment called SETUP.EXE. The icon for the file looks just like a standard Windows icon, except for the color. The message within the e-mail is a simple smiley ":)". While W32/CTX is in memory, it will scan all of the following file types for potential victims by picking out e-mail addresses: DBX, EML, HTM, HTML, IEX, MBX, NCH, TXT. W32/CTX uses several techniques designed to evade detection by anti-virus software products.

  • Dude says:

Could it be possible that there is an update to this virus?

My second anti-virus alerted me to W32/CTX although Norton 360 did not find it.

I put it into the quarantine then I did the search as above.

I did not find W32/CTX in Windows Task Manager and also not in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software.

Subsequently I deleted W32/CTX from the quarantine.

Some minutes later the anti virus alerted me again for W32/CTX.

I deleted W32/CTX directly and searched for W32/CTX in Windows Task Manager and also in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software but again it was not there.

So it must be hidden with a different name if it still on my HD.

What other names would be possible?

  • BRC says:

Anyone with further advice? I am havig a similar issue to the poster(Dude) above. My secondary virus program keeps finding it. i move to quarantine ad even delete completely from the virus program bt it keeps coming up(finding it). I didn't find it withthe path above but foundit on its own is a folder and labeled as malware. I am going to delete it and hope all is well.
    Any advce is much appreciated!

    Best,
    BC
