WannaOof Ransomware

Posted: May 2, 2019

The WannaOof Ransomware might look like a joke project judging by the messages and name it uses, but you can rest assured that this ransomware’s attack is no joke – it is perfectly able to encrypt a large number of your files, making it impossible to access their contents. The file formats that the WannaOof Ransomware targets are documents, images, videos, archives, spreadsheets and various other file types. After the attack is complete, the WannaOof Ransomware may mark the names of all locked files by adding the ‘.oof’ extension to their names.

Instead of providing a plain text-file ransom note, the WannaOof Ransomware’s operators have opted to display their message in a new program window called ‘WannaOof.’ It tells victims that their files have been encrypted and they will need to pay a fee of 0.02 Bitcoin to guarantee their recovery. However, it appears that the attackers have not provided a valid Bitcoin wallet address, nor have they supplied an email address to contact them. This means that potential victims of the WannaOof Ransomware would be unable to fulfill the demands of the perpetrators or establish contact with them.

There are two possible reasons why the WannaOof Ransomware is like this – it was either made as a joke, or it is still unfinished, and its authors are preparing the release of an improved version. The crucial thing to remember is that their reasons do not matter, and you must always take all necessary actions to protect your data from threats like this one – the best way to achieve this is to take advantage of the services of a reputable anti-virus program.
