Mikeyy Twitter Worm Attack Advances

Posted: April 13, 2009

A malicious worm called 'StalkDaily' or 'Mikeyy' is currently affecting the micro blogging social network Twitter.

Over the weekend the malicious worm currently plaguing Twitter mutated into something potentially more severe. The Worm called 'Mikeyy' or 'StalkDaily' was created by a 17-year-old teen, what some believe to be, out of boredom. This Twitter worm is designed to generate thousands of spam messages that contain the word 'Mikeyy' from infected users' Twitter accounts. Security experts have witnessed these attacks for the past 4 days. The infected users do not know this is happening unless they take the necessary steps to check for the infection.

Twitter is currently advising it's users to avoid clicking on any links from messages that contain the words 'Mikeyy' or 'Stalkdaily'. Avoiding use of the Web-based version of Twitter will limit the chances of your account being compromised. Twitter is recommending that you use third-party Twitter desktop clients such as TweetDeck or Twhirl which are available for both PC and Mac.

In addition to using third party Twitter apps to avoid this new Twitter worm, you can disable JavaScript in your web browser because the Twitter worm can infect you through java scripts. If you use Firefox then you can use the No-script add-on or plugin which will stop any unwanted scripts from running.

How do you know if you have 'Mikeyy' (the Twitter Worm) and how to remove it?

Suspicious activity from your Twitter profile or messages that have the words 'Mikeyy' or 'Staldaily' may be a clear indication that you are infected.

An easy solution to removing this worm is by following the few steps below.

  • Turn off JavaScript.
  • Clear your browser cache.
  • Log into Twitter and delete all messages in your profile that contain the word 'Mikeyy' or 'Stalkdaily'.
  • Turn JavaScript back on.
  • Log back into Twitter.
  • Change your bio, URL and preferably your password.

Optional steps:

  • Log back out of Twitter.
  • Use Twitter via a third-party application.

With this type of computer infection developed by a 'bored teenager', do you think Facebook will be next? Will we will see an increase in infections of this type plaguing social networks?
